Defence suppliers including, Bharat Forge and Mahindra instructed to ramp up production of munitions and carriers – Business News

India Pakistan News: Amid the ongoing tensions against Pakistan, the Indian government is actively engaging with private defence manufacturers to significantly boost the supply of crucial military equipment and ammunition, according to Indian Express. Companies like Bharat Forge and Mahindra & Mahindra’s defence division have been contacted with specific instructions to increase their output.

The report suggests, the push reflects India’s focus on scaling up the production of specialized ammunition, particularly for anti-drone systems and smart weaponry. Additionally, the government is seeking an increased supply of armoured vehicles capable of integrating various weapon systems, such as loitering munitions and guided missiles. These private firms are being asked to enhance their production of these designated items beyond the current output from state-owned ordnance factories. Industry insiders anticipate a follow-up meeting with these suppliers in the near future.

Bharat Forge, with its extensive defence manufacturing facility near Pune, specializing in the assembly and integration of various arms and vehicles, is a key player in this initiative. Their expertise spans advanced Artillery Systems, notably the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), a 155mm/52 caliber howitzer developed with DRDO, capable of a 48 km range and high firing rate. The ATAGS boasts superior range, mobility, and firing rate compared to traditional towed guns.

Mahindra’s defence division, already licensed to produce small arms and ammunition, also specializes in armored and non-armored vehicles for the Indian Army, including vehicles like the Marksman and Rakshak. This move aligns with India’s “Make in India” initiative, which has significantly boosted domestic defence production, with about 65% of equipment now made in India compared to a high import dependency a decade ago. The private sector, including Bharat Forge and Mahindra, now contributes a growing 21% to the nation’s defence production, alongside a burgeoning ecosystem of licensed companies and MSMEs.
