Green Card holders must use new Form I-90 starting this week – Investing Abroad News

Posted on 28 May 2025 by financepro

Green card holders in America need to be aware of the new changes introduced by the US authorities. Starting this week, lawful permanent residents who are looking to replace their green cards will have to use a new version of the form.

The form to be used as an application to replace the Permanent Resident Card is Form I-90. Starting May 29, 2025, those who file Form I-90 to replace their permanent resident card in the United States must meet new requirements specified by USCIS.

A Permanent Resident Card is proof of your permanent resident status in the United States. It also serves as a valid identification document and proof that you are eligible to live and work in the United States.

Although some Permanent Resident Cards, commonly known as Green Cards, contain no expiration date, most are valid for 10 years. If you have been granted conditional permanent resident status, the card is valid for 2 years.

You should renew your Permanent Resident Card if you were issued a card valid for 10 years that has either expired or will expire within the next 6 months.

Form I-90 is an application to replace the Permanent Resident Card or the Green Card. As a lawful permanent resident, one must have a valid, unexpired Green Card or equivalent documentation at all times. Even if one is applying for naturalization or citizenship, this requirement does not change.

While filing Form I-90, it is important for US green card holders to ensure that all the forms they have filled are the current acceptable edition, before sending them to USCIS. They also need to ensure that all pages in each form they submit are from the same form edition, to avoid rejection.

Before filing Form I-90, US green card holders are also urged to check Naturalization Eligibility tool to see if they are eligible to become a U.S. citizen.

However, if one is a conditional resident seeking to remove conditions on their Green Card, Form I-90 cannot be used.

If you are a conditional resident, you must submit either the Form I-751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence, to remove conditions on a Green Card obtained through marriage; or Form I-829, Petition by Investor to Remove Conditions on Permanent Resident Status, to remove conditions on a Green Card obtained through financial investment in a U.S. business.

New Green Card Form

Starting May 29, 2025, USCIS will accept only the 01/20/25 edition. The 04/01/24 edition forms will be out of use from May 29, 2025. One can find the edition date at the bottom of the page on the form and instructions.

When you complete and print this form to mail it, make sure that the form edition date and page numbers are visible at the bottom of all pages and that all pages are from the same form edition. If any of the form’s pages are missing or are from a different form edition, USCIS may reject your form.

You have two options for filing your Form I-90 application with USCIS: Online or by mail (paper). The filing fee for Form I-90 – Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card is $465 for Paper Filing and for Online Filing it is $415.
