Harry Potter reboot series is the most expensive TV show ever at $100 million per episode; Know why it is so expensive – Entertainment News

Posted on 22 May 2025 by financepro

Move over Game of Thrones and The Rings of Power, there’s a new giant in the world of big-budget television, and it’s armed with wands, spells, and a price tag that’s not for the faint-hearted. The upcoming Harry Potter reboot has officially claimed the title of the most expensive TV series ever made, with a jaw-dropping budget of over Rs 35,000 crore (that’s $4.2 billion, if you’re counting in dollars). But why is the Harry Potter reboot series so expensive? We find out.

Harry Potter reboot series to cost $100 million per episode; Why is it so expensive?

While reboots are nothing new, this one is different. Far from a simple retelling, Warner Bros. is pulling out all the stops to give J.K. Rowling’s iconic story a more detailed and faithful adaptation. Each of the seven books will be transformed into its own season, with six episodes apiece, totaling 42 episodes of spellbinding storytelling.

According to Express, the show’s per-episode budget is expected to cross $100 million, blowing past the previous standards set by The Rings of Power ($62 million per episode) and Game of Thrones ($15 million at its peak). To put that into perspective, even Star Wars: The Force Awakens cost ‘just’ $440 million overall.

There will be Potterville, a city built for Harry Potter’s magic

A big chunk of the budget is going into something truly extraordinary – a custom-built wizarding world known as Potterville. Warner Bros. Studios is currently constructing this massive set, which will serve as the series’ magical backdrop. At a reported cost of over £1 billion (around ₹11,000 crore), this mini city will feature intricate recreations of Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, King’s Cross Station, and even the Dursleys’ Privet Drive.

The set is being designed with long-term use in mind, hinting not only at multiple seasons but also potential spin-offs and extended storytelling within the wizarding universe.

Harry Potter series will have a new cast

With new stories come new faces. The reboot is introducing a completely reimagined cast, starring:

John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore

Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall

Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape

Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid

Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell

Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch

What makes the Harry Potter series the most expensive ever is that it’s shaping up to be more than just a nostalgic reboot; it’s a full-scale reinvention of a universe that still captures imaginations of millions of people worldwide.
