Retro Box Office Collection Day 3:Fans in Chennai flocked to cinemas on Thursday to catch Retro, an action-packed thriller marking the eagerly awaited team-up between actor Suriya and director Karthik Subbaraj. Following the success of Subbaraj’s last film Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023), expectations were high for Retro to rejuvenate Suriya’s career after his previous film Kanguva underperformed at the box office in 2023. However, Retro seems to be following a similar trajectory to Suriya’s last venture, with its box office collection faltering in the days after a strong opening.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Retro enjoyed a solid opening of Rs 24 crore on Thursday. However, the film saw a significant dip on Friday, with daily earnings dropping to Rs 7.75 crore. Despite expectations for a weekend boost, the film’s earnings on Saturday mirrored Friday’s performance, earning another Rs 7.75 crore. As of Sunday, Retro’s three-day total at the domestic box office stands at Rs 34.75 crore.
While the film’s earnings across different languages are yet to be fully calculated, Retro has earned the most in Tamil, followed by the dubbed Telugu and Hindi versions. However, the film’s performance so far mirrors that of Kanguva, which opened strong with Rs 28.5 crore but saw a major decline to Rs 11.25 crore on the second day and marginally picked up to Rs 11.75 crore on day three. Kanguva eventually earned Rs 81.22 crore during its lifetime run.
Occupancy levels for the Tamil version of Retro have also shown inconsistent patterns. Saturday morning saw a low occupancy of 28.28%, which picked up to 45.02% in the afternoon. However, the evening shows dipped again to 42.16%, before witnessing a peak in the night, with 54.74% occupancy. The Sunday earnings will be crucial for the film to recover and close the extended opening weekend with a solid box office performance.
Retro also stars Pooja Hegde, Jayaram, Joju George, Karunakaran, Nassar, and Prakash Raj, with Shriya Saran appearing in a special cameo. Despite the initial box office disappointment, the film still holds potential, with many hopeful for a bounce-back in the coming days. However, it remains to be seen if Retro can reverse its current trend and turn into a box office success.
