In today’s list of bizarre news from around India, we have reached Kerala. Munnar, the dreamy hill station in Kerala, is in news for its wonderful twist on milk consumption. A Scottish travel vlogger, who goes by the username @hugh.abroad, stumbled upon a milk-dispensing ATM in Munnar and shared the video on his Instagram. The video was widely circulated and it became viral soon. Let’s find out more about the milk ATM in Munnar.
In the video, the vlogger is pleasantly surprised when he stumbles upon this unique concept. He then goes to greet the vendor and is even more taken aback when he finds out that the machine dispenses milk for just Rs 52 a litre.
The video then goes on to show that after the correct amount is inserted in the slot, the vendor at the machine presses a button, after which the milk starts to fill up in the jar. One will have to get their own cup or container, depending on how much milk they want to buy. In the video, the vendor also reveals that the machine dispenses fresh milk every day.
Impressed the working hours fo the vlogger – 8 am to 7 pm, the vlogger says, “I have never seen that ever in my life. That is a very cool concept. Also, it is very good for the environment. There are no milk cartons lying around the place. Amazing.”

Needless to say, the comments section filled up in no time. While it was a completely new concept for some, many others who grew up in Kerala took a trip down memory lane. One user wrote, “In my childhood, I loved buying milk from this dispenser. We used to put 5 rupee coins depending on how many litres we wanted.”
Another user commented, “When I was a child and I saw this for a milk machine, my uncle convinced me that there is a cow inside the machine that lives there and gives the milk when you push the button.”
One user wrote, “What Kerala thinks now, India thinks later a decade .. Kerala for reason,” while another wrote, “There are also water ATM machines,” and another wrote, “We have them in the Netherlands as well. Usually at dairy farmers with unpasteurized fresh milk. You can bring your bottle or often buy a glass one there.”
This is Idukki’s first 24-hour milk vending machine in Munnar, which was inaugurated by Minister for Dairy Development and Animal Husbandry, J Chinchu Rani, in August 2024.
