Infosys Layoffs: In a move to soften the blow for 240 entry-level trainees recently fired, software services giant Infosys has announced a range of support measures including free external training, accommodation, travel allowances, and one month’s salary, as per reports. The IT major is partnering with training platforms NIIT and UpGrad to help the affected employees prepare for alternate career opportunities.
Why the trainees were fired?
According to company emails reportedly sent on April 18, the 240 trainees were relieved from their positions after failing to meet the qualifying criteria of Infosys’ Generic Foundation Training Program. The email stated that despite extended preparation time, additional doubt-clearing sessions, and multiple assessment attempts, the trainees were unable to pass. Consequently, they could no longer continue their apprenticeship journey within the company.
How is Infosys helping the trainees upskill themselves?
Infosys, however, extended a helping hand to the impacted trainees. In its communication, the company outlined several support measures, including free external upskilling programmes conducted via NIIT and UpGrad. Affected employees will receive a travel allowance to either the Mysuru training centre, Bengaluru, or their hometowns for the duration of the training.
Additionally, Infosys has offered the option to pursue two different learning pathways: one tailored for potential roles in the Business Process Management (BPM) industry and another focused on Information Technology fundamentals, allowing trainees to continue refining their IT skills.
What all in the package?
As part of the severance package, each trainee will receive one month’s salary. Infosys has also engaged professional outplacement services to assist these individuals in finding new career opportunities. The company stated in its email, “As you explore opportunities outside of Infosys, we have planned professional outplacement services to help you on that journey.”
The move comes as Infosys contends with a challenging business environment, having forecast a modest revenue growth of 0 to 3 percent for the current fiscal year. Despite the layoffs, Infosys CFO Jayesh Sanghrajka recently confirmed that India’s second-largest IT services firm plans to hire over 20,000 freshers in FY26.
