The long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for release in early June 2025.The announcement was made earlier this year, with the trailer revealing several upgrades to the system. A significant hike in price for the upcoming edition of the video game console has however left fans across the world fuming.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is now set to release on June 5 after several delays with a price tag of $449. The Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle will cost $500. The trailer revealed that the new device will have a powerful processor, a Joy-Con 2 controller which can also be used as a mouse, and a bigger and more vibrant screen. Nintendo has also opted to provide a separate chat button and online multiplayer gaming options for fans.
The trailer launch has irked Nintendo fans across the world due to the changes and upgrades in the console and price. Furious fans took to Reddit this week — outlining a litany of complaints ahead of the release.
Lack of Innovation
The first and foremost complaint is that the console feels the same as the Nintendo Switch Pro, and there’s a lack of innovation — which many said that they had expected from Nintendo. Several users have also questioned the lack of inclusion of 4K in the handheld mode.
“I waited years for this, and it’s a souped-up Switch with a chat button and a camera no one asked for. Nintendo’s out of touch—huge disappointment,” one user wrote on the r/Switch community.
Hardware
Gamers claim that the hardware of the Nintendo Switch 2 will not be able to compete with the PS5 or the Xbox Series X. Many have also they have raised questions about the integration of LCD and not OLED displays.
“They hyped up the Switch 2 like it’d be a big leap, but it’s just a slightly beefier Switch with a bigger screen. No OLED at launch, no real 4K handheld potential—just a cash grab with DLSS tacked on. Disappointing,” read a comment on the r/NintendoSwitch subreddit.
Pricing
OThe Switch 2 has moved far ahead of its predecessor when it comes to pricing. The console costs $449, and the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle costs $500. Meanwhile the previous model (Nintendo Switch) had been launched at $299. The price has moved a bit faster than the fans assumed; hence, they also criticize the brand for it.
After the announcement of the tariff from the USA, there has been speculation that the price of the console might rise, as the manufacturing of Nintendo is done in China and half of the USA’s hardware manufacturing unit is in Vietnam and Cambodia.
“The $500 bundle with Mario Kart World is a joke. Why are we paying more for a game that’s basically a glorified expansion pack? Nintendo’s greed is showing, and it’s a slap in the face to loyal fans,” read one comment on the r/Games sub-Reddit.
Design and durability
The new magnetic Joy-Con design, which features a protruding Nub connector, is something that could break easily, claimed a Reddit user. The thin Joy-Con, which is used in the new Switch 2, is also a concern and seemed ‘unreliable’ to the fans.
“Those magnetic Joy-Cons look flimsy as hell. The nub connector is begging to snap off if you drop it once. Did they learn nothing from Joy-Con drift?” wrote another Reddit user.
It is pertinent to note that Redditors have also praised several inclusions in the Nintendo Switch 2. This includes the integration of Game Chat, the larger 1080p HDR display, and robust third-party support (e.g., Cyberpunk 2077).
