If you use a smartphone as old as a decade, there’s bad news for you. WhatsApp’s newest update has altered the minimum compatibility for several Apple iPhones and Android smartphones. While this usually translates to more advanced features that make better use of newer devices with higher-end specs, it also means that older devices are rendered obsolete.
The latest update to WhatsApp renders it incompatible with a bunch of older smartphones that launched almost 10 years ago. The list includes some popular Apple iPhone models of the past as well as some heroes of the Android universe, both across the flagship and midrange segments of that era.
WhatsApp’s compatibility excludes all Apple devices running on iOS 15 and older versions. For the Android universe, all devices running on Android 5.0 and older are no longer supported.
Hence, WhatsApp’s messenger and call services will cease to exist from June 1, 2025 on some of these popular devices of the past:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone SE (1st gen)
- Samsung Galaxy S4
- Samsung Galaxy Note 3
- Sony Xperia Z1
- LG G2
- Moto G (1st Gen)
- Motorola Razr HD
- Moto E 2014
What to do if WhatsApp no longer supported by your phone?
The chances of someone using such older devices in 2025 may be slim but if you are a part of the small group, there’s no need to panic. In order to use WhatsApp, you need to upgrade to a new device at the earliest. Any new smartphone today will not only be compatible but also provide a far more secure and superior messaging experience on WhatsApp.
On the sidelines, WhatsApp recently released a dedicated app for the iPad platform, thus ending the long wait for iPad users. The iPad app offers all the benefits of its smartphone-based counterpart and adds more value with its multitasking capabilities and support for Apple’s Center Stage feature.
