Bollywood’s very own Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir Khan, has long been associated with ambitious cinema, but his latest revelation might just be his biggest yet. During a candid conversation on a podcast with entrepreneur and influencer Raj Shamani, the acclaimed actor dropped a major hint – Mahabharat, the mythological epic he’s been dreaming of making for years, might be his final cinematic project. But is Aamir Khan retiring after Mahabharat?
For fans who’ve followed Aamir’s career marked by blockbuster films and meticulous storytelling, this announcement is bittersweet. Currently gearing up for the release of Sitaare Zameen Par, sequel to his 2007 drama Taare Zameen Par, Khan revealed that once the film is out, all his focus will shift to Mahabharat – a film he’s long described as his passion and life’s dream.
When asked what he would choose as the subject of his last film, the Lagaan star took a thoughtful pause before responding with, “It’s my dream to make Mahabharat,” he said. And then he added, “Maybe after I do that, I will feel that now I don’t have anything left to do. I cannot do anything after this, as the material of this film is going to be like that.”
He went on to explain the essence of the epic and why it holds such an important place in his heart. “Layered hai, emotion hai, scale hai, har cheez hai usme. Har cheez jo duniya me hai wo aapko Mahabharat me milegi,” he shared, expressing the enormity of the themes within the ancient text.
In a wistful tone, Aamir added, “I hope that I die with my shoes on, lekin kyuki aap puch rahe to ek hi cheez hai jo main soch sakta hu. Shayad ye karne ke baad mere andar wo emotion aaye ki ab iske baad mujhe kuch nahi karna, shayad.”
This isn’t the first time Aamir has spoken about his plans for Mahabharat. In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Dangal actor described it as “one of my biggest ambitions,” noting that the writing process alone would take several years. He confirmed his involvement as a producer and suggested that the scale of the project could rival anything Indian cinema has attempted to date.
Who will star in Aamir Khan’s Mahabharat?
As for the on-screen cast, Aamir kept it open-ended. “We’ll see who we should cast based on who’s appropriate for which part,” he said, leaving fans curious whether he himself might take on one of the legendary roles from the epic.
And what about directing? While it’s too early to confirm if Aamir will take the reins as director, he did reveal that the scale of Mahabharat demands a storytelling approach that spans multiple films, and, with it, multiple directors. “It’s not a story that can be told in one go,” he explained, hinting at a cinematic universe that may unfold over time.
There’s no doubt that Aamir Khan is preparing for a legacy-defining movie. As Sitaare Zameen Par continues to garner more buzz and with Mahabharat in the pipeline, Aamir Khan might be preparing for retirement.
