Train Accident in Odisha: Atleast one person dies and eight people sustained injuries after The SMVT Bengaluru-Kamakhya AC Express train derailed in Odisha’s Cuttack district on Sunday.
DM Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde says, “One person has died in the incident…8 people injured needed a referral and have been shifted. An enquiry is being done of the incident.”
According to Ashok Kumar Mishra, the East Coast Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), the incident occurred at 11:54 a.m. near Nirgundi, close to Manguli, when eleven coaches of the SMVT Bengaluru-Kamakhya AC Express went off track.
Two people from Assam injured
Two persons from Assam were injured in the train derailment. Assam CM Sarma confirmed his office is coordinating with Odisha authorities. The SMVT Bengaluru-Kamakhya AC Express accident near Cuttack resulted in one death and seven injuries.
Sarma assured assistance to affected passengers, stating, “We will reach out to each and every person who is affected.” He later clarified that two Assamese passengers, Willson Digal and Amiran Nisha, were injured but are stable. The train, en route to Guwahati, experienced 11 coaches derailing at Nirgundi.
NDRF, fire services on spot
Emergency response teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and fire services, were promptly alerted, and a relief train was dispatched to the site. Senior railway officials and support staff also reached the location to assess the situation and assist passengers.
To help affected travellers, helplines 8455885999 and 8991124238 were set up. Efforts were made to ensure stranded passengers could continue their journey without major inconvenience.
Meanwhile, authorities are investigating the cause of the derailment while working to restore normal rail operations at the earliest.

Special train to transport passengers
HS Bajwa, Divisional Railway Manager of the Khurda Road Division, stated, “Today, the Bangalore-Kamakhya Express derailed near Nergundi Railway Station. A special train is being operated on the same route to transport passengers to their destination. Once this is completed, restoration work will begin. We will provide ex-gratia compensation from the railway and have made arrangements for food, water, first aid, and buses for the affected passengers. Both NDRF and SDRF teams are present at the site. An enquiry will be conducted to determine the cause of the incident.”
