Studio Ghibli-style images: OpenAI’s latest update to ChatGPT has unlocked a powerful new image-generating capability, leading to an explosion of Studio Ghibli-style images being shared across the internet.
can yall please chill on generating images this is insane our team needs sleep
— Sam Altman (@sama)
However, the overwhelming demand for the feature has put immense strain on OpenAI’s resources, prompting CEO Sam Altman to urge users to slow down. “Can y’all please chill on generating images? This is insane, our team needs sleep,” Altman posted on X.
Lots of people need to be awake when load is high?

In response to another post, Altman revealed the extent of the pressure the update has placed on OpenAI’s team, stating, “We just haven’t been able to catch up since launch, so people are still working to keep the service up. Biblical demand, I have never seen anything like it.” This is not the first time OpenAI has struggled to manage its resources due to ChatGPT’s image-generation capabilities. Recently, Altman announced limits on image generation for Plus and Pro users, citing that OpenAI’s GPUs were under extreme stress.
Image generation
Previously, ChatGPT relied on external models like DALL-E 3 for image creation, but the new update integrates image generation directly into the GPT-4o model. This allows the chatbot to produce more nuanced and contextually aware images by leveraging its language understanding. OpenAI initially rolled out this feature to Plus, Pro, and Team users, but even free users can now experiment with Ghibli-style images.
While the Ghibli-style trend has dominated social media, ChatGPT’s image-generation capabilities extend beyond that. The AI can create comics, posters, presentations, and infographics, offering users new creative possibilities.
What is Studio Ghibli?
Founded in 1985 by Miyazaki Hayao, Takahata Isao, and Suzuki Toshio, Studio Ghibli is renowned for its hand-drawn animation and rich storytelling. Iconic films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke have cemented the studio’s legacy in global animation. With OpenAI’s latest update, users can now bring the magic of Ghibli into their AI-generated creations.
