WhatsApp has added a new functionality to make group conversations a lot more fun. Groups, regardless of the number of members, now gain the ability to host voice chats involving multiple members. The feature has been around for the past few years but WhatsApp limited it to large groups only. Now, the feature has been unlocked for groups of all sizes.
As part of a new update, WhatsApp now brings the ability for multiple members to get into a quick voice chat. The feature is ideal for those situations where a text chat may not suffice owing to urgency or complexity of the discussion, and there is a need for people to get together. At the same time, it is ideal for those moments where the conversation doesn’t require everyone to be on a group call.
WhatsApp Voice Chat: How to use the feature
The Voice Chat feature is part of the latest and most up-to-date version of WhatsApp available on Google Play and the Apple App Store. Once you download and install the updated version of the app, you can exploit the new feature.
- Head to the WhatsApp group of your choice by going to the bottom of your chat.
- Now, swipe up from the bottom and hold until you see the Voice Chat prompt. Tap okay to start the conversation.
- Once the Voice Chat starts, you can start speaking and deliver your message. The group will be given a link to join the group Voice Chat you created.
- Note that the Voice Chat won’t notify the rest of the group members with a notification or a call. Only those exploring or actively participating in the group chat window can opt to join.
- The Voice Chat gives you call control options to end it or mute the mic when required. For other members, they can see who else has joined.
- Other group members can join and leave the Voice Chat as and when they feel it is right.
Are Group Voice Chats as safe as calls and messages?
Similar to WhatsApp calls and messages, the Group Voice Chats are also end-to-end encrypted. This means that neither WhatsApp nor a third party can snoop in and listen your voice chats.
