The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that it will soon issue new Rs 20 denomination banknotes under the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. These notes, it added, will bear the signature of the current RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra.

“The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue Rs 20 denomination Banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series bearing the signature of Shri Sanjay Malhotra, Governor. The design of these notes is similar in all respects to Rs 20 banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series,” said the RBI in an official statement.

Per the release, the design of the Rs 20 banknotes will be similar in all other aspects to the new series of notes circulating in the nation, except for the new governor’s signature. “All banknotes in the denomination of Rs 20 issued by the Reserve Bank in the past will continue to be legal tender,” it said.

Issuing new notes bearing the signature of the newly appointed RBI governor is a routine process after a change in the leadership and it does not affect the validity or value of the existing currency notes in circulation.

According to the RBI, the Mahatma Gandhi (new) Series of Rs 20 banknotes have the dimensions of 63 mm x 129 mm, with the base colour in “Greenish Yellow”. The reverse side of the note features an illustration of the Ellora Caves, showcasing India’s cultural heritage, accompanied by additional designs and geometric patterns that complement the primary color scheme.
