OpenAI recently released its, now viral, Ghibli-style image generator, but the feature has become so popular that the company is now limiting its wide usage. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Thursday announced, “our GPUs are melting”. Soon after the announcement, the company paused the new image generator for free users.
But the bad news doesn’t end there. People who use ChatGPT for free, will now face a daily limit on the number of images that they can generate. Altman took to X and shared the news.
“It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT. but our GPUs are melting. We are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient. Hopefully won’t be long! ChatGPT free tier will get 3 generations per day soon,” Altman wrote on X.
Since GPT-4o rolled out its Ghibli-image generation feature, OpenAI has seen a huge rise in its usage. People quickly began using it to make Ghibli-style art and generate their own portraits. However, the high demand led to a lot of pressure on OpenAI’s GPU resources, leading to processing limitations.
Many users had already started facing problems while generating these images, as it showed constant errors while trying to do doing so. ChatGPT also restricts the users from modifying real human faces into Ghibli images, as it only allows general illustrations.
It’s quite clear that the decision has been made to keep things running smoothly. Although Altman did not specify the da or date of when the company will limit the usage but he made it clear that free-tier users will soon be able to generate just 3 images per day.
