After Swiggy shuts Genie, Uber swoops in with a wink—and a meme – Brand Wagon News

Posted on 8 May 2025 by financepro

Swiggy has quietly shut down Genie, its hyperlocal delivery arm, as it doubles down on food delivery and quick commerce. But what could have been a routine corporate pivot quickly turned into a brand moment, thanks to Uber.

Shortly after news of Genie’s closure surfaced, Uber jumped in with a cheeky social media post: “No Genie, No Problem. The magic is still alive with Uber Courier.” The post featured an image of the iconic blue Genie from Disney’s Aladdin, in the famous scene where the Genie is freed, capping off the message with both humour and opportunism.

Genie fades out quietly

Launched in April 2020, Swiggy Genie began as a lockdown-era solution for intercity errands and item delivery, competing with players like Dunzo, Porter, and Uber’s own Package (now rebranded Uber Courier). But unlike Instamart, Swiggy’s quick commerce arm, Genie, never grew into a high-performing business vertical.

The exit comes on the heels of Dunzo’s own scaled-back operations in hyperlocal delivery, leaving the space open for newer or refocused players to swoop in.

Uber, Rapido, and Porter smell opportunity

For Uber, the moment was as much about brand positioning as it was about business. By tapping into a pop-culture meme, complete with nostalgia and strategic timing, the company positioned Uber Courier as the dependable alternative in a post-Genie world.

Porter and Rapido, which also offer parcel delivery services, are likely to scale in this gap as well, but neither has yet matched Uber’s storytelling flair in seizing the moment.

For Swiggy, the decision to axe Genie signals a sharper focus on Instamart, a vertical that has quickly become a battleground with Blinkit and Zepto. The latter has been particularly aggressive, investing in deep inventory, 10-minute delivery promises, and marketing firepower.

In this context, Genie’s shutdown is less a retreat and more a realignment. Swiggy is betting that the future lies in instant groceries and meals, not errands.
