Sitting at our homes and judging celeb looks from the Met Gala comes easy. In addition to outfits of the day commanding all the attention, a prime focus is also on who accompanies whom to the event. While many couples, including Pharrell Williams and Helen Lasichanh, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, and Dua Lipa and Callum Turner, did serve being in love with style on Monday night’s blue carpet, some equally significant A-listers chose to sit out the gala.
There are also fears tied to the so-called “Met Gala Curse,” which suggests that once a celebrity couple hard-launch their relationship on the red carpet, they end up calling it quits shortly after that (With Priyanka and Nick being one of the notable exceptions to have actually embarked on a romantic and eventually happily-married journey post their Met Gala debut). Here are some couples, who despite still being very much together, did not attend this year’s fashion extravaganza on May 5.
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds
Though originally a staple at the Met Gala, having also co-chaired the event in 2022, Blake and Ryan again decided to pass on the event this year. Although the decision inevitably points fingers to them being caught in the Justin Baldoni lawsuit drama, a source told Us Weekly in March that A Simple Favor actress was skipping the 2025 gala because “she’s not a Kardashian that goes every year.” A TMZ report credited the same reason for the couple’s absence, noting that they didn’t see it as an annual routine to be followed.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce
The mega pop star skipped the Met Gala for the ninth year in a row. Her NFL beau Travis Kelce also remained a no-show, and yet it is believed that they both received invites to the fundraising event. Had they showed up, this would have been their Met Gala red carpet debut. While Taylor Swift last attended fashion’s biggest night in 2016, when she served as a co-chair, her the Kansas City Chief tight-end has ever once been there.
The “Love Story” songstress skipping the Met Gala doesn’t come as a surprise, given her track record with the annual event. Moreover, she’s especially stepped out of the spotlight ever since she wrapped up the Eras Tour. Kelce has been following a similar lowkey routine since the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl title in February.

Hailey Bieber minus Justin Bieber
It’s no shocker to see Justin Bieber skip yet another red carpet event in attempt to maintain his streak to stay out of the limelight, Having previously attended the event in 2021 with his wife, Hailey, JB chose to share a snap with a couch view this year while the gala ongoing. While Hailey Bieber chose to go to the glam night, Justin was presumably making the most of a boys’ trip. His recent social media activity showed him paying golf. Fans also hailed the pop star a true Canadian for possibly having missed the Met Gala to reportedly catch the Toronto Maple Leafs vs Florida Panthers hockey action live.
Kylie Jenner minus Timothee Chalamet
Kylie and Timothee could’ve hard-launched their relationship on the Met Gala stage on Monday. However, Jenner walked the blue carpet alone while the Oscar-winning actor remains noticeably absent. Much like Justin Bieber, Timothee also picked game night over the fashion gala. The couple has been inseparable at these public events, but this time he opted to watch the Knicks vs Celtics game from home.
George and Amal Clooney
Despite currently being based in New York City, according to Elle.com, the couple was not seen at the 2025 Met Gala. The Clooneys, who were last in attendance for the gala in 2018, most probably skipped serving couple goals at the Met this year due to George Clooney’s Tuesday night Broadway performance schedule.
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco
Selena and her husband-to-be Benny were missed at the Met Gala again after having skipped the event last year. Like her bestie Taylor Swift, the Only Murders in the Building star has long been a no-show, with her last appearance dating back to 2018. As per Gomez’s recent IG photo dump, the couple chose to take it easy on Monday night in the company of their friends and other loved ones. Instead of going through fittings for the Met Gala, the pair went all comfy mode.
