On Friday, the Reserve Bank of India rejigged portfolios of its deputy governors, with Poonam Gupta assuming charge of Deputy Governor. She is given the key monetary policy department charge.
Besides monetary policy, she has been assigned the responsibility of seven other departments, including corporate strategy and budget, communication, and financial stability.
Gupta has been appointed for three years.
Who is Poonam Gupta?
Poonam Gupta is an alumna of the Delhi University. She completed her undergraduate degree in Economics from the Hindu College of the Delhi University in 1989 and her master’s degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics of Delhi University. She went to the United States, where she completed her M.A. (Economics) and Ph.D in Economics from the University of Maryland.
Before assuming the charge of Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Poonam Gupta was Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). AT NCAER, Dr Gupta led research on the international financial architecture, central banking, economic growth, macroeconomic stability, and state finances.
Prior to joining NCAER, Dr Gupta worked for about 20 years with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. Additionally, she has also worked as a professor at the India Council of Research on International Economic Relations as well as the RBI Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy.
Dr Gupta has published numerous research papers in the leading economic journals and has also written a book titled Emerging Giants: China and India in the World Economy.
