Lady Gaga has found an unexpected archnemesis in a surfboard company, according to a new lawsuit. Lady Gaga plagiarism allegations
Of all the possible adversaries, Lost International, a surfboard brand, has accused Lady Gaga of plagiarism. According to a new lawsuit obtained by TMZ, the company is coming after the “Poker Face” hit-maker over claims of trademark infringement. Lost International has accused the beloved diva of using the term “Mayhem,” which they claim to own the rights of since 2015 as it stands in as a signature identity of the company logo. Accusing Gaga of ripping off the identical style for her new album, Lost International stated in the lawsuit that their surfboards and merchandise has borne the “Mayhem” mark for over a decade.
Surfboard brand vs Lady Gaga lawsuit
Noting the similarities between the designs, the surfboard brand’s filing included side-by-side comparison of their and Lady Gaga’s “Mayhem” logos. Raising the legal argument against the A Star is Born actress for unfairly positioning the logo as her own without their permission, Lost claims to have attempted to bridge a communication channel with Gaga before. They alleged that the Grammy-winning artist pushed their concerns aside and used the design despite the issue being addressed — hence, the lawsuit.
Through their legal action, the surf company hopes to block Lady Gaga’s alleged infringement of the logo. They also want damages, including profits she’s amassed through the use of the “Mayhem” design.
About Lady Gaga’s Mayhem album
Gaga’s “Mayhem” album released on March 7 through Streamline and Interscope Records. Her seventh studio album comprises a 14-part tracklist, including her Grammy-winning collaboration with Bruno Mars, “Die With a Smile.” Other tracks listed on the album are “Disease,” “Abracadabra,” “Garden of Eden,” “Perfect Celebrity,” “Vanish Into You,” “Killa (ft Gesaffelstein),” “Zombieboy,” “LoveDrug,” “How Bad Do U Want Me,” “Don’t Call Tonight,” “Shadow of a Man,” “The Beast,” and “Blade of Grass.”
Describing the musical theme of her latest album, Laga Gaga said, “I feel like this new album, in a lot of ways, is […] from a place of happiness instead of misery,” last year. During the Variety interview, she also alluded to her fiancé Michael Polansky, a Harvard grad and tech founder: ” Michael and I are really excited to organize our lives—and our marriage—around our creative output as a couple. Which is really different than, like, doing what other people want you to do.”
Addressing the musical subjects of her album, she explained, “I wrote a lot of various fantasies and escapes. The only place reality is really present is that these fantasies are coming from a real person, trying to soothe their inner chaos. That’s where I found the reason for why I make this music. Each song is an exercise in personal chaos—a way to deal with myself. The album is not extremely serious in that its very fun and meant to be enjoyed at a party, in a club, or at home having personal fun time—to be free of your worries at home or walking through life,” per Vogue.
