The OpenAI’s head of product has said that the company would be interested in buying Google Chrome if the proposed remedy by the US Department of Justice comes to fruition, as reported by Reuters.
Google Chrome has a monopoly on online search, so to end the same, antitrust enforcers proposed a remedy last year, according to which Google must sell Chrome to end its monopoly in the search browser. The trial for the remedy phase started on Monday.
Nick Turley, head of product ChatGPT, who is also a witness for the government, testified that OpenAI reached out to Google last year for a partnership that would allow ChatGPT to use Google’s search browser. As they face several issues with the current search information partner. However, Google has rejected their offer.
Turley said that “we have no partnership with Google today.”
Department of Justice in US vs. Google
A district court judge, Amit Mehta, had found that Google has maintained a search monopoly by entering into an exclusive deal with some device manufacturers like Samsung, Motorola, and AT&T, setting Google Search as their default browser in the device. Google was also considering extending its Gemini AI app and Chrome Browser, locking more control over the Android ecosystem, as per the evidence presented.
But recently, Google has modified its contract with Samsung, Motorola, AT&T, and Verizon, in which the companies can promote other search engines as well. On the same ground, Google argues that it has made the required changes in the deals, and now the concern over dominating the search browser is being resolved.
The Department of Justice, on the other hand, is urging the judges to impose remedies like banning Google from offering financial incentives in exchange for installing its search app.
