Bank Holiday on 18 April 2025 Good Friday: Bank outlets will remain closed in various parts of the country on April18 as thousands mark Good Friday. The solemn Christian occasion commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his subsequent death. It is marked as a government holiday in India — with schools, colleges and other public offices, and even the stock market remaining closed.
Easter Sunday is celebrated by Christians across the world on the Sunday that follows the first full moon — on or after the spring equinox. Good Friday is celebrated three days earlier on the Friday preceding Easter. In 2025 it will be marked on April 18.
Are banks closed on April 18?
Banks will observe a holiday in several parts of the country on April 18 for Good Friday. This will affect banking services in several key cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai.
According to the official holiday calendar maintained by the Reserve Bank of India, it will be observed in Agartala, Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh), Hyderabad (Telangana), Imphal, Itanagar, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Srinagar and Thiruvananthapuram.
Good Friday is a gazetted bank holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act of 1881. However banks will remain open in a few areas including Agartala, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Jaipur, Jammu, Shimla and Srinagar.
Customers will however be able to visit banks on April 19 as it is a working Saturday. A weekly bank holiday will be observed on Sunday (April 20).
What banking services will remain available?
Bank outlets will remain closed it most major cities (as listed above) on Friday. Customers will however be able to use online services and ATMs during this time. Internet and mobile banking as well as various banking and investment apps will remain available to users — unless a bank shares a specific notice due to maintenance timings or technical issues. All bank websites, banking apps, UPI, and ATM services remain active throughout the year.
