IT services major Wipro concluded FY25 with the addition of 10,000 freshers, in line with its stated annual target of hiring between 10,000 and 12,000 campus recruits. While the company aims to maintain a similar hiring target for FY26, it will closely monitor the evolving business climate before committing to final numbers.
Speaking at the company’s earnings conference, chief human resources officer Saurabh Govil said Wipro would remain measured in its approach to hiring, given the ongoing macroeconomic uncertainties. “We ended the FY25 with approximately 10,000 freshers hired. And we look to continue to see that, but we will also keep a very close look at what’s happening in the environment,” he said.
Govil emphasised the company’s focus on deploying hires effectively rather than hiring aggressively. “We don’t want a situation where we on-board people and we don’t have channels of deployment. We have burnt our fingers three years back, so we are very conscious about doing it the right way,” he said. He also pointed out that Wipro still has headroom to improve employee utilisation, which has become a priority in the current environment of low revenue growth.
In the January-March quarter, Wipro added 614 employees, reversing a net decline of 1,157 in the preceding quarter. This brought its total headcount at the end of FY25 to 233,346, an annual increase of 732 from the previous year. The company’s attrition rate on a last-twelve-month basis declined to 15% in January-March quarter from 15.3% in the preceding quarter, while employee utilisation improved to 84.6% from 83.5%.
Wipro is also approaching its wage hike cycle with caution. “We were the ones who did wage hikes ahead of time in September. We had done the previous time in December. We are still very far from that time, and in this uncertain environment we will decide closer to the date,” Govil said, echoing a similar note of restraint as rival TCS.
Looking ahead, CEO and managing director Srini Pallia noted that clients are expected to remain cautious, particularly with large transformation projects and discretionary spending.
The country’s largest IT services firm Tata Consultancy Services, which announced its earnings on April 10, added 625 employees in the fourth quarter, ending the fiscal with a net addition of 6,433 and a total workforce of 607,979.
